Creation of a Productivity Database on Japanese, Chinese, and South Korean Companies (East Asian Listed Companies[EALC] Database 2010)

In Japan, China, South Korea, and other East Asian countries, the expansion of direct investment and the growth of China's economy have formed the backdrop of a rapid expansion in the trade in products. The appearance of South Korean corporations such as Samsung Electronics and Hyundai Motor that are highly competitive internationally along with the development of mainly foreign-capitalized firms in China have subjected Japanese manufacturing companies to intense international competition. Meanwhile, through the conclusion of negotiations on a USA-South Korea FTA and China's entry into the WTO, trade in China and South Korea will further liberalize. This is drawing attention to the question of what type of firms will be able to survive. The degree to which South Korean and Chinese firms have caught up to those in Japan is a very interesting question, and one on which very little research has been done.

Based on an awareness of these issues, in FY 2006 the study group on the Creation of a Productivity Database on Japanese, Chinese, and South Korean Companies at the Japan Center for Economic Research (JCER) created the East Asian Listed Companies Database 2007 ("EALC 2007") along with the Hitotsubashi University Center for Economic Institutions (CEI), the CENU Center for China and Asian Studies (CCAS;Professor Tomohiko Inui as project representative), and the Center for Corporate Competitiveness of Seoul National Universiry(Professor Keun Lee as project representative). EALC 2009 is a current version. EALC database in principle targets all listed firms in Japan, China, South Korea, and Taiwan (not including the financial sector). It includes data necessary to measure total factor productivity at the company level and the periods covered are 1985 through 2005 for Japanese firms, 1985 through 2005 for South Korean firms, 1999 through 2005 for Chinese firms, and 1985 through 2005 for Taiwan firms.

In order to estimate the EALC database, in addition to the public financial data of listed firms, we used data such as the JIP Database created by the Research Institute of Economy, Trade and Industry (RIETI) and the Institute of Economic Research, Hitotsubashi University; industrial statistics from each country; and estimated relative prices of Japanese, Chinese, and South Korean industry from the Research Institute of Economy, Trade and Industry's International Comparison of Productivity among Asian Countries (ICPA) Project.

Research on direct comparison of total factor productivity at the corporation level is rare even in Europe and the USA. The Japan Center for Economic Research, the Hitotsubashi University Center for Economic Institutions, the CENU Center for China and Asian Studies, and the Center for Corporate Competitiveness of Seoul National Universiry plan to continue joint research, including revising and updating the EALC database, expanding the countries targeted, and analyzing results.
